Exercise on the Fourth Way of Georges Ivanovič Gurdjieff
THE REMEMBER OF SELF
The Fourth Way is an experiential path to personal growth developed by George Gurdjieff during his travels in the East between 1890 and 1912, aimed at the awakening and enlightenment of man.
According to his approach we are living, but we are not aware of ourselves, we are not aware of being or living. There is no memory of self. While we are eating, writing, reading or walking: we are not aware of being while we are walking. Everything is but us. The trees, the houses, the traffic, everything is. We are aware of our surroundings, yet unaware of our own being.
The Fourth Way is developed in a series of exercises structured to awaken the human being from a sort of trance, of hypnotic sleep that makes him mechanical, Gurdjieff referred to the sleeping man as a "machine". Among the different instruments of awareness of the mechanisms he also used the Enneagram, unbeknownst to his own students.
